WHAT'S HAPPENIN' in U.City - October 2003

Loop News:   Loop in Motion starts on Fri. Oct. 3rd, 6 to 9pm, with an
Art/Gallery Walk, refreshments, entertainment and great fun.  On Sat. Oct.
4th, noon to 8pm, you will see the Loop de Loop Parade, an Arts Exhibit,
Little Artists in Motion, a Dance Stage at Westgate, a Music Stage at
Leland, a Jazz Stage at Tivoli parking lot, and many sidewalk activities.
The new building at 6662 Delmar (former Smith Hardware site) is nearing
completion, and they are seeking new retail businesses. The Delmar Loop
Laundromat will be moving to a new location at Vernon and Kingsland when the
new building is completed. The Regional Arts Commission has moved into their
new offices at 6128 Delmar.

U.City High School Varsity Football games at home will be on Oct. 4th, Oct.
25th, and Nov. 8th.  For JV Football and Freshmen Football schedules, call
290-4106.

The temporary bridge over the construction on Forsyth near Bally's is easing
the congestion on that road. We have also made many "cut-thru" streets
special no-speeding zones, with double fines for violators.

The best time to get your flu shot is between September and mid-November;
don't wait too long. It takes 1-2 weeks to develop protection, and the shot
needs renewal each year.

I've asked the County traffic dept to install left turn signals at Delmar
and Kingsland, to ease traffic problems.

The 7 newly constructed condos at Gannon and North & South are now ready for
occupancy. Check it out.

We approved the low bid for the rehab of the Heman Pool, including a new
kiddie pool, which came from Westport Pool Co. for $1.54 Million; work
should begin shortly, with completion in May 2004.

The Council approved the basic concept for the new Recreation Facility in
Heman Park, that will include basketball courts, raised running track,
expanded fitness center, lockers/showers, meeting rooms, etc.; which will
give the engineers some design guidelines.  Also, a grant is being solicited
for a refurbished enclosed soccer field.

The U.City Children's Center groundbreaking ceremony at 6646 Vernon took
place on Sept. 10th; they will be moving in after the rehabilitation work is
complete.  Wash. U. is sharing this facility.

The proposed reconstruction work by MoDOT at the Olive/I-170 Interchange is
being reviewed by Olivette.

The Council approved a conditional use permit for Wei Hong Seafood
Restaurant at 7740 Olive, which will be a new restaurant, bakery and banquet
center, utilizing the former church and expanding into the west lot.

The Olive Business Association has adopted a new marketing logo - "U City
Olive Link" - which will appear on pole banners along Olive.

U.City East is offering their free monthly health tests at the Library,
9-11am, Sat. Oct. 25th and Nov. 22nd.

Their semi-annual stakeholders meeting will be Thurs., Nov. 13th, 7pm at
All Saints School Bldg; 721-6133.

The Council has raised ambulance fees, refuse rates, Planning Dept
application fees and permit fees; all to more closely reflect actual costs
of performing these services.

COCA has submitted a request for review of a proposed addition and
substantial renovation.

University Park #2 subdivision is in the process of creating a neighborhood
improvement district, which will eventually turn their streets over to the
City, and disband the subdivision (includes Dartmouth & Tulane).
