Chinese-American Identity Conference to take place Oct. 18 at UMSL

Scholars and writers from across the country will lead discussions during the Chinese-American Identity Conference, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Century Rooms of the Millennium Student Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The conference will include:

* "Assimilation and Barriers to Assimilation," led by Daphne Kwok, executive director of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies in Washington

* "Continuing Chinese Immigration," led by Xiao-Huang Yin, chair of the American Studies Department at Occidental College in Los Angeles

* "Intermarriage and Adoption in the Chinese-American Community," led by Amy Klatzkin, contributing editor to Adoptive Families Magazine in New York

* "Raising Children and Supporting the Elderly," led by Ching-Ling Tai, president of the St. Louis Chinese Culture Association, and Harold Law, president of the Chinese American Forum in St. Louis

Conference sponsors include the Center for International Studies at UMSL, Chinese American Forum, St. Louis Chinese American News and Families with Children from China.

The cost to attend is $14. Lunch, coffee breaks and parking will be provided. Registration is required.
