China Night, a showcase of various Chinese performing arts, will be held on April 25, 2004 at 6:30pm at the Columbia Performing Arts Center, 100 N. Cedar Lake Dr. E, Columbia, Missouri. This cultural event features twelve vivid performances of traditional and contemporary Chinese dances, a showing of classical Chinese costumes, martial arts, folk music, ancient musical instruments, Beijing Opera, and vocal performance.
As the reality of globalization unfolds, the plurality of discreet cultural spheres rapidly gives way to a larger concept of mankind where cultures are neither defined by nor confined within national boundaries. America, with its multi-ethnic heritage and its dynamic fusion of different cultures, creates an environment that values diversity. China Night's primary emphasis is to celebrate the Chinese Arts and foster a cross-cultural dialogue for the greater enrichment of an emerging global culture at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the surrounding communities.
China Night manifests the complexity and profoundness of the Chinese civilization. The program in China Night is directed by Professor Jimmy (Jianmin) Hao, an internationally renowned choreographer and professor of Ballet and Chinese dance. The majority of the performers are MU international students from China. Highlights of the program include the performances of Yungu Hao, Professor Hao's daughter, a well-trained dancer, and Jinxiu Huang and Xiaoyu Xie, two professional dancers from St. Louis. Additionally, two American groups, Stephens College Dance Department and Pu Ting Shih Kung Fu Academy, will be joining the performance as another distinctive feature of the show.
This cultural event is organized by the Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars (FACSS) at the University of Missouri-Columbia, an officially registered student organization and the largest international student body on the MU campus. This magnificent event is sponsored by the University of Missouri's Office of Vice Provost for Minority Affairs, the International Center, the Asian Affairs Center, and the Missouri International Student Council, as well as the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chicago. Many businesses in Columbia have also pledged their support, including the Columbia Performing Arts Center, Stephens College, Commerce Bank, First National Bank & Trust Company, Boone County National Bank, Hong Kong Buffet, Hong Kong Market, Perry Chevrolet GM Car Dealership, Wal-Mart, Famous Barr, Holiday Inn, HyVee and Drury Inn.
China Night is open to the public and admission is free; however, tickets are required for admission. Free tickets will be distributed at the Memorial Union on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus on Wednesday, April 21, 10am-1pm and Saturday, April 24, 1pm-4pm.
