Authors, Writers Get Caught Reading @ St. Louis County Library
(St. Louis, MO.) May is "Get Caught Reading Month," and St. Louis County Library is celebrating with author visits and other programs throughout the system. Get Caught Reading Month is a nationwide campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. Programs are free and open to the public. Program sites are accessible. Gary Shteyngart, author of The Russian Debutante's Handbook (Riverhead Books, June 2002), a New York Times Notable Book for 2002, one of The Washington Post's and Entertainment Weekly's Best Books of 2002, and winner of the BOMC Stephen Crane First Fiction Award, will read from his book and answer questions. Shteyngart was born in Leningrad and currently lives in New York City. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Author Marshall Boswell, assistant professor of English at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, will discuss his collection of short stories entitled Trouble With Girls (Algonquin Books, March 2003). Boswell recieved his M.A. in English in 1989 from Washington University. Trouble With Girls?is "a humorous ascent into manhood through the eyes of Parker Hayes, a 14-year-old Memphis teenager paralyzed by his raging hormones and the fear of being branded a geek" in the 70s (Booklist).

Route 66 by Quinta Scott. From 1926 to 1956, Route 66 was the road to opportunity. Unique architecture was built reflecting regional building traditions and the difficulties of the times. Many of these structures are still standing. Ms. Scott, a leading authority on Route 66, will present a lecture with slides on the subject. Take a trip on Route 66 from Chicago, Il, to Santa Monica, CA, with a stop in St. Louis, MO.

Author Iris Chang will discuss her newest book The Chinese in America: A Narrative History (Viking Press, April 2003). She is the author of The Rape of Nanking (BasicBooks/HarperCollins 1997), a book describing the slaughter, rape and torture of 300,000 Chinese civilians by Japanese soldiers in the capital of China during an 8-week period in 1937. It was cited as one of the best books of 1997 by Bookman Review Syndicate. Copies of her books will be available for purchase. Ms. Chang was born in the United States, raised in Champaign-Urbana, Il, and currently resides in California.

Book Discussion Club. Author Marella Sands will visit during Florissant Valley Library's Book Discussion Club as they discuss her second novel Serpent and Storm (New York: Forge, 1999) about a young Mayan priest who is sent to another kingdom to reopen diplomatic ties only to be complicated by the mysterious death of their king and the evil fortune that descends upon the kingdom. Ms. Sands, who lives in St. Louis, will discuss this work and answer questions during her visit.

Book Discussion Club. Author Sharon Shinn will visit during Florissant Valley Library's Book Discussion Club as they discuss Archangel (Ace, 1996) or Heart of Gold (Ace, 2000). A writer of fantasy and science fiction, Ms. Shinn has published eight novels with her most recent being Angelica, (Ace, March 2003). Wrapt in Crystal (Ace, 1999) was a finalist for Best Fantasy/Magical for the Pearl Award 1999. Shinn, who lives in St. Louis, will discuss her works and be available for questions.
